It's true that a good portion of MySQL would be safe even if Oracle decided to kill it. Those "safe" bits have already been forked as MariaDB, a project run by former MySQL creator, Monty Widenius. A separate "fork in spirit" also exists with Drizzle, led by former collegue of Monty, Brian Aker.

It's also true that many open-source alternatives exist to MySQL. For example, the PostgreSQL database is a viable alternative (and considered by some to even exceed MySQL in many ways).

So, the notion that the EU would kill this deal over fear about MySQL seems... odd to me. There must be something else motivating this. I wonder where to look?
